Award winning mosaic artist Marian Shapiro moved to the Blue Mountains in 2013 and has been involved in the trail since its reinception. Shown and collected nationally and internationally, Marian makes art and architectural mosaics for home and garden and teaches mosaic locally, nationally and internationally.  Visitors to the arts trail will see and have the opporunity to buy wall hanging and sculptural mosaics and exquisite tempered glass mirrors.  Marian's studio is open both days of the trail.  This September, she is sharing her studio with visual artist Christine St Flour.

Her work has been commissioned for many public and private spaces, both in Australia and abroad, including a public commission in the centre of Sydney.  She is also a sought after teacher and speaker and her work has been featured in many books and magazines and on television.  She has participated in many group and joint shows over the years and has had two solo shows in Sydney. Marian has been a five times finalist in the prestigious Mosaic Arts International show in the USA, and in 2013, 2015 and 2017 was a finalist in the Mosaic Association of Australia and New Zealand’s bi-ennial national show.   Working mainly in glass, stone or marble, Marian takes this ancient artform and gives it a contemporary twist.

Rather than represent a scene, Stephen prefers to confine his artwork to a section often akin to looking out an upper floor window. More than just reducing the scope of the image, the elimination of the wider context instead emphasises the constituent parts of colour, shape, light, tone, texture, and positive and negative space. This allows the observer to construct their own ‘overall whole’ - to move backward from the image and connect with their own past sensory experiences within the Australian environment, as well as introducing new, present ones to them. And, he really, really likes Waratahs and Gymea Lilies.

Main BMAN Profile for Alison James

Ingrid Russell was born in Graz, Austria, in 1956. Her parents migrated to Australia in 1960 and settled in Sydney's west.

From an early age she was always painting, drawing and creating crafty objects, and continued this fascination through high school.

Ingrid’s work is represented in private collections in Australia and Europe. She regularly exhibits in group exhibitions in the Blue Mountains and elsewhere in NSW.  Her work has been published in The Australian Artist Magazine.  In 2007 she won the people’s choice award in the Annual Friends of Braemar Exhibition and her work has been regularly chosen as a finalist in the Blacktown Art Exhibition, achieving a Commended award in 2009.  Also in 2009, Ingrid held a very successful solo exhibition at The Event Horizon Gallery in Katoomba.

Ingrid works mainly in acrylics in more abstract and contemporary styles, focusing on colour, line and perspective.  “I am interested in the juxtaposition of 3D and 2D and the optical illusion of perspective on the picture plane. I love to play with colour and often let the painting take its own course, my hand being the conduit for my imagination, and I will often look at a work for days before it deciding what it wants to be." Presently Ingrid is working on a series lossely titled "Looking Up' focussing on the canopies of Australian gum trees.

She has also created a line of hand crafted jewelry and ceramics under the label Iggiruss Designs

The works I present are a result of my drive to capture the present by reinventing my inner past. They are a manifestation of my life. I have had to constantly reinvent myself with each new hurdle put in my path. Each work is created from fragments of my past. Past successes, failures, strivings and revelations have been reassessed, directed, added to and meshed together.

I have always drawn or painted since childhood, inspired by my uncle Ted who was a  sketch artist. I migrated to Sydney Australia from the U.K. in 1978 and 2 years later, had an exhibition of 30 works in scraperboards at a Glebe gallery.

In 2006 I was introduced to Encaustic art, and a great love affair using coloured beeswax as a medium, began. From small works on card and paper, I progressed to large canvases, and my art created increasing interest in this fascinating medium.

2011 saw my first solo exhibition at Faulconbridge in The Blue Mountains, as well as The Archetype Gallery Paddington, and  TAP Gallery, Darlinghurst. I have donated my art for children’s medical research including Jamm 4 Genes; painting jeans belonging to actor Gina Riley. I exhibit regularly in the Winmalee Artfest, Springwood Art Show and BentArt  Wentworth Falls School Of Arts.

I facilitated wax art classes for Springwood & Winmalee Neighbourhood Centres to assist those affected by the October 2013 devastating bush fires that swept through areas of The Blue Mountains.

'The Elements - Earth Water Air Fire' Exhibition at Braemar Gallery from 24 August to 17 September 2017. Ancient cultures refined the complexity of all matter into four elements - earth, water, air and fire.

Each physical element recognises the infinity of relationships between all of the elements, and their shaping of human activities, cultures and beliefs. In the immensity of the Blue Mountains natural environment, the elements of earth, water, air and fire surround us. In our daily experience, we live with the grand scale of canyons and etched peaks, changing atmospherics over endless forests, spectacular cascades and reflective pools, torrents of rain and gentle mists, always anticipating the destruction and renewal created by fire.

Braemar Gallery, which is located in Braemar House, hosts a Blue Mountains Artists Exhibition with many Blue Mountains artists exhibiting works.
